Elsa Giöbel was a daughter to the forestry officer Adrian Giöbel. He was born 10 Oct 1841 in Hammar, Sweden; moved to England 2 Mar 1914 where 3 of his daughters lived; died 3 Apr 1919 in Warkshirehouse, Wales. He is buried in Tintern near the shore of Wye due to an "In memoriam". He was a member of The New Church (Swedenborgian).

He was forestry manager in Aspa bruk 1865-1866, Hasselfors 1867-1873, Hällefors 1873-1891. In 1890-1901 he was forestry officer in Örebro revir (rangership of national forests). He also started an peat factory in Järle 1889 which he lead to 1909.

A sister to Adrian was the famous swedish textile artist Selma Giöbel (1843-1925).

Elsas mother was Maria Karolina Matilda Frigelius, wife to Adrian Giöbel. She was born 1846 in Stockholm, Sweden; moved to England with her husband 1914.

A sister to the mother lived in London where she teached in music. This aunt was a friend to Jenny Lind, the famous swedish singer.

Elsa hade two brothers: Karl Fredrik Giöbel; born 13 May 1869 in Skagershult, Sweden; dead 22 Apr 1925 in Engelbrekt, Stockholm, Sweden. Christian Gunnar Giöbel; born 21 Nov 1893 in Axberg, Sweden; dead 3 Jun 1977 in Uppsala-Näs, Sweden.

She also had 3 sisters: Anna Maria Björk (born Giöbel); born 9 Mar 1871 in Skagershult, Sweden; dead 28 May 1958 in Olaus Petri, Örebro, Sweden. Lovisa Maria Giöbel; born 1874 in Hällefors; Sweden. Moved to England. Gerda Maria Giöbel; born 1886 in Hällefors, Sweden. Moved to England.

Elsa began painting in 1903 and the following year traveled to Stockholm and had to borrow Richard Bergh's studio. She studied at the Artist League school. 1905 and 1911, she made trips to Berlin and Dresden. Of the female students at the Artists' Association said Carl Larsson in particular, have lift up her talent. Her trip to the continent, however, meant that she came into contact with modern art and she started to lose confidence and stopped painting.

Her early paintings were exhibited a few times in England. One who was impressed by this Otte Skold, who found that some of her paintings, during the early 1900s, showed similarities with Sven Erixon X - ets way to paint.

She was a promising pupil at the Artist League School when she on a journey to England 1911 met Philip Oyler. They married and he forced/persuaded her to burn her paintings and all and he didn´t want her to continue her painting. They moved to Wales where they lived on a farm and worked as farmers. Philip and Elsa had the daugther Soldanella, born 1913.

Elsa separated from her husband and in 1939 (1940 due to church records) she moved back to Sweden with her daughter Soldanella and they settled in the village Järle (in the parish of Ervalla) in the neigbourhood where her family once had lived. Here she began to paint again! This latter painting was not considered as interesting as her work from the early 1900s. Her daughter also painted - plants (flowers) mostly.

Elsa died at the age of 96.
