E. Eugene Newsom, 61, of Creekside, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at his home with his family by his side. He was born Nov. 9, 1952, in Girty, the son of Robert E. and Audrey L. (Yount) Newsom. Eugene lived in Creekside most of his life and was of the Baptist faith. He worked in the masonry field and enjoyed using his talents to create special stone patterns. Eugene was an excellent chess player and avid dog lover. He also loved hunting and was proud of his recent accomplishment of shooting a 17-point buck with a 303 British rifle without a scope. Eugene will be best remembered for his determination to complete what he started. He will be deeply missed by his mother, Audrey L. Newsom, of Creekside; son, Nicholas Choe Newsom, of Colorado; grandchildren, Alicia Epina Newsom, of Oklahoma, and Xavier Newsom, of Florida; sisters, Darlene Rupert and husband, Larry, of Elderton, Charold Silvis and husband, Jack, of Coeburn, Va., Brenda Bash and husband, Jerry, of Creekside, and Roberta Spencer and husband, Johnny, of Dayton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Eugene was preceded in death by his father and sister, Robin Gillespie. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Atwood Cemetery, Atwood.
