WARNING: There is a second person in Ancestry whose name almost duplicates that of Elliot Hirst Whiteley. He is usually (but not always) named Elliot Whitley and was born in the Holme and Holmfirth area within 5 years of the man described here! His parents were James and Phillias and he married another Phillias.
Ancestry tends to find the above person rather than Elliot Hirst Whiteley (whose name in the census manuscripts is always spelled the same way). Our man became a police constable before the 1861 census and moved to Aston Under Lyne in Lancashire. His death registration was eventually found in Stockport, Cheshire.
