MRS. E. V. BURNES

As briefly mentioned in our last issue, Mrs. Ellen Victoria Burnes passed away on Thursday at her home at Mitchell's Island. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Vallis, she was born in the Shoalhaven district 73 years ago. In 1890 she was married at Kangaroo Valley to Mr. Joseph James Burnes, and for a few years they resided at Numba, in that district. In 1893 they moved to the Manning, where Mr. Burnes became one of the original staff of the Croki butter factory. About 44 years ago they moved to Brighton, where they spent the rest of their lives. Mr. Burnes passed away in 1907. The late Mrs. Burnes was noted for her kindly, generous disposition. It is said of her that she considered others before herself, and was always anxious to do a good turn. She had not enjoyed good health for a couple of years, but was buoyed up in anticipation of the return home of her son, Sgt. Fred Burnes, who was a prisoner of war in Borneo. Following the cessation of hostilities she received the sad news that her son had died in a prison camp, and thereafter her health rapidly deteriorated. Mrs. Burnes is survived by the following children: Messrs, James and Walter Burnes (Crowdy), Samuel Burnes (Mitchell Island), Mesdames Roy Jobson and Roy Adams (Mitchell's Island. One daughter, Mrs. T. R. Jobson (Mitchell's Island) predeceased her, and a son, William, was drowned on the Harrington Bar at the age of 13 years. There are 30 grandchildren and, 23 great grandchildren. Mrs. Burnes was the last of a family of 11. The funeral, which left her late home on Friday afternoon for the Mitchell's Island cemetery, was largely attended by relatives and friends. Rev. R. A. Munro conducted the service, and Mr. S. W. Bridge carried out the funeral arrangements.
