Did Ellen die in Pulaski County after the 1880 census? Or did she go with the family to Indianapolis c1888 and die there? No evidence has been found either way. And while Ellen was living with her daughter and son-in-law in the 1870 and 1880 censuses, where is she in the 1860 census? She has not been found anyway in Indiana. Hypothesis: If the widowed Mrs. Ellen Hayes really was c.40 years old when her (probably youngest) daughter, Johannah, was born, it might mean that by 1853 (when Ellen was 53) all her older children were married off and/or established in life. She was by that point apparently a widow, so either Johannah had a reason to go to America (at age 11?) and Ellen accompanied her -- OR -- an older son or married daughter went to America and Ellen and Johannah both accompanied them -- OR -- Ellen had her own reasons for wanting to go to America and took Johannah (her late-in-life child and the only one not married?) with her. If the second possibility, this might also mean Ellen was living for awhile with that other married child in the 1860 census. . . . References
