Ellen was left with five children when 1st husband Samuel Flint was killed. About three years later she married again to William Jesse Simmonds who was several years her junior. William or Jesse, as he preferred to be known, took on the responsiblity for the family.

The census in 1891 shows the boys as Jesse's sons with the surname of Simmonds but in 1901 this has changed back to Flint and they are recorded as stepsons.

The records don't show how well Jesse and the boys got on nor can family history shed any light on this. Jesse must have had a big heart to take on the responsiblity for six people.
