Ellen Oliver was baptised on 6th December 1837 at Lifton in Devon, daughter of Ann Oliver. The family lived at the hamlet of Tinhay to the east of the village. The 1841 census finds Ellen living with a family called Pelew on Fore Street in Lifton. By 1851, Ellen had moved about fourteen miles south of Lifton to Bere Ferrers, where she lived with her mother Ann and stepfather William Leigh and half-siblings at Gullytown.
In 1860, aged 23, Ellen married an agricultural labourer named Christopher Foot Drake, who was 31 and from Bere Ferrers. They settled in the village of Bere Alston, the largest village in Bere Ferrers parish, where they had three children between 1861 and 1878, although there was a large gap between their second and third children.
Christopher died in 1885, aged 56. Ellen survived him by 43 years. She continued to live in Bere Alston and worked as charwoman. She died in 1928, aged 90.
