Ella was a nursing sister who served in Egypt and Palestine between 1917 & 1919.

An extract from her military record reads; "C of E. Trained at the Adelaide Hospital, is a member of the R.B.N.A., Volunteered 1916, Joined the Staff of the Hospital Ship Karoola 25-4-19 & remained with her until the ceasation of hostilities. Granted leave on account of sickness in family from 8/6/20 to 11/6/20 both days inclusive. Annual leave from 14/8/20 to 31/8/20."
