Excepts from letter written by Ella B. Schoonover to Mattie W. Baird (Martha Ann Wilcox, daughter of Andrew Jackson Wilcox and Martha Ann Allbritten)

Mrs. Mattie W. Baird Hazel, KY

Dear Cousin,

.......I never hear from my Kentucky kin. All of my very near relatives are dead or moved away except Uncle Worth Allbritten, he is my mother's brother. _____ I correspond with Mrs. Kirkland and Mrs. Lula Ryan, old schoolmates. ________ It has been about 38 years since I was back in Kentucky, I mean Murray, have not been back since my Grandma Allbritten died. My mother is the oldest child of Bluford and Emmaline Burton Allbritten. _________ We are both widows. My husband passed away Feb. 1901 and my father Sept 1909.

Mother said she was sorry she did not keep up with the history of her kin. I try to do so as much as I can. _______ I give you the names as mother tells me. Her grandpa was John Manly Allbritten and married Mary Todd. His sister married Mary Todd's brother. John Manly's children were Tom, the oldest son, Isaac, Bluford born 1811, Beverly, John, William (Uncle Bill), Betsy married Williams, Polly married Steely, Eliza married Robbins, Martha married Wilcox. I cannot tell you the year John Manly Allbritten was born, but he was baptized by John Wesley. ______ If I trace correctly, the Allbrittens came from England and Ireland. Mother's mother was Emmaline Burton born 1818, daughter of John and Mary Ann Richie Burton, born in North Carolina. The Burtons and Richies came from Scotland and the north of Ireland. I remember the last time I saw your mother, it was when she visited us at Grandpa Allbrittens when they lived near New Concord. I was almost grown then or thought I was. _____ The Allbrittens and Burtons married among the Todds, Richies (or Richties), _ivers, Garners, Steeles (or Steeleys), Wilcox.

I hope my information will be of some help to you and would be glad if you would write me all you know about our kin as I am a great hand on Ancestry. It is a good idea to keep up with such things. To tell you of the Bolens. My mother, Mary Caroline Allbritten and James Nelson Bolen were married March 10, 1858 and April 25 1859 I made my advent in Murray, KY. The Bolens or Boleyns came from England. His mother, Nancy Walters Bolen's people came from Switzerland and at one time were very wealthy people. I know no more about the Walters. The Bolens married among the Allbrittens, Rolfs, Randolphs and Jeffersons of VA.

I hope to hear from you again soon. Mother also sends her love to you.

Your Cousin, Ella B. Schoonover
