MRS. AMOS HOPKINS: Elizabeth Jane Whitman was born Saturday October 29, 1831, in Marion, Wayne County, New York, and came to Michigan about 1850. On March 19, 1854, she was married to Amos Hopkins, who passed away November 19, 1912. To them were born eight children, four having passed to the better life. The four remaining are Herbert of Battle Creek; Adelbert of Bronson; Mrs. Mary Thompson of Matteson an Mrs. Violetta Himebaugh of Battle Creek. Also 28 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors, all of whom mourn her loss - the loss of a mostexcellent pioneer citizen. She passed away Sunday 10 February 1919 atthe age of 86 years. The funeral was held from the residence, east of Burr Oak, yesterday afternoon, February 12. Rev. Wearne and Undertaker Renshaw officiating.Burial in the Adams Cemetery. Elizabeth lived 86 years, 3 months and 12 days. "Burr Oak Acorn - 4 August 1907 - IN THE SHADE OF THE OLD APPLE TREE Last Sunday, at the home of Amos Hopkins, east of town, about twenty-four of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, came to remind him if his 78th birthday. A table was spread "in the shade of the old apple tree" and it fairly groaned with the goodies brought for the occasion. And then, too, there was music throughout the day from the Edison phonograph; and then followed ice cream and cake. Among thosepresent were Mr [Henry] and Mrs [Mary Hopkins] Thompson of Matteson, Arthur Himebaugh and family of Bronson, and the Herbert Chase Hopkins and William Clarence Spencer families of Colon, also Marion Wimer and Frank Holcomb of Centerville. The day was well spent and will be very pleasantly remembered for a great while. Longlive Mr Hopkins, who hasthe esteem of every citizen."

OBITUARY: Amos Hopkins was born in Savannah, New York, August 13, 1829, coming to Michigan and settling near Bronson in 1844, where he lived until he was called to the Home beyond, November 19, 1912. He was one of twelvechildren of whom four survive him- three brothers, Nathaniel, Orlo and John, and one sister, Violetta. He was married to Miss. Elizabeth Jane Whitman, March 19, 1854, and tothis union eight children were born: Herbert C., Ella A., Adelbert W., Emily and Emory, Mary M., Violetta M., Minnie P. Emily and Emory andMinnie having proceeded their father tothe better land thirty-four years and Ella proceeded him twenty years ago. He enlisted in the Army of the Potomac, February 18, 1864, serving till the close of the war. In the year 1866 he gave his heart to the Savior and joined the Methodist church at Burr Oak, and has been ever faithful to his trust till the Savior called him Home. He has been a patient sufferer for several years. He leaves to mourn his loss a loving and devoted wife, four children, twenty-eight grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and a host offriends. The funeral was held at the Adams’ schoolhouse, Thursday, November 21, 1912 at 10:30. Rev. Yaneh of the Bronson Methodist Church officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Adams’ Cemetery. He lived 83 years, 4 months and 6 days.

MRS. AMANDA WHITMAN: Was born at Port Gibson, New York, October 7, 1808 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Amos Hopkins, two and one half miles east of this place, October 2, 1888, hence her age was four score less five days. The funeral services were conductedby the Rev. H.W. Thompson from the house, October 5, and the remains were interred in what is known as the Adams burying ground, located on Smoker road. The deceased was married at Williamson, Wayne County, New York, September 17, 1828 to John S. Whitman. They resided in the above named placeuntil 1853, then moved to Branch County, MI. where she has since resided and as a consequence, was one of the old pioneers of this section. She was left a widow at the age of 26 years, with four children, threesons and one daughter, two of whom still survive her, Reverend Barnabus H. Whitman and Mrs. Amos Hopkins, the former now residing at Norwood, Charlevoix County, Michigan, and thelatter, two and one-half mileseast of this place. Five years ago Mrs. Whitman met with a sad misfortune, the breaking ofone of her limbs and owing to her old age never fully recovered from the shock to her nervous system, though the painful fracture had entirely healed. Two years later, in the month of July, she was the victim of a still more shocking calamity; that of losing her eyesight entirely, but bore up under her sad misfortune with a determination characteristic only of old pioneers, who had learned to be patient through every trial. She enjoyed a visit from her son, Rev. B.H. Whitman, some three weeks since, and seemed to be in much better health and spirits than usual. On Tuesday, however, the cold hand of death was stretched forth and she was called away to the land where nosorrow and pain is known. She arose in the morning in apparently as good health as usual, partook of breakfast with the rest of the family. At about 11 o’clock she was sitting in her arm chair. Her head suddenly dropped and she expired instantly without apparent pain. She lived 79 years, 11 months and 25 days. Mrs. Hopkins was the only child that followed her to her last resting place; Rev. B.H. Whitman being ill and unable to be present in consequence. The family have the sympathy of the entire community. The family of the late Mrs. Emma* Whitman, desire through the columns of the ACORN, to express their thanks to the friends and neighbors whoshowed their sympathy and regard to the family in their recent sad bereavement.

DEATH OF REV. B.H. WHITMAN The sad news was received here Sunday of the death of Reverend B.H. Whitman, at his farm home, near Deer Lake, this county. Reverend Mr. Whitman was for many years an active member of the Michigan Conference ofthe Methodist Episcopal Church, and held charges in various parts of the Conference District. About twenty years ago he served four years as pastor at Charlevoix, and was noted for his piety and earnestness. On leaving here he was in poor health, and, having bought a farm in Hayes Township, he moved there, where he remained for several years. He returned to the ministry for a short time, but finally sold his farm in this county, moving to Elmira, Antrim County, where for some timehe kept a store. About three years ago he bought and moved to the farm where he died. In his younger days he was a farmer near Coldwater, where he was converted, and where he recognized a call to enter the ministry. He was an earnest and forceful preacher, and always made many friends wherever he was sent.

REVEREND B.H. WHITMAN Barnabus H. Whitman was born in Wayne County, New York, January 1, 1828, and died at his home near Boyne Falls, Michigan, March 17, 1907, aged seventy-eight years, nine months and sixteen days. His father died when he was ten years old. This deprived him of early educational advantages. His entire schooling was less than one year. February 14, 1847, he married Sarah A. Crystler. He then came to Michigan and located at Sturgis. Here he lost his first wife. November 5, 1861, he was married to Mary Jane Wells. He was converted January 8, 1865, under the labors of Reverend WilliamDoust, by whom he was baptized and received into the church August, 1886, in Burr Oak. The call to preach came with his conversion. In May,1868, Reverend N.M. Steele licensed himto exhort in Bronson charge. In September, 1868, Reverend R.C. Crawford gave him his license to preach. He then entered the Michigan Conference and passed the required course of studies. He was ordained as deacon by Bishop Ames in 1872, and ordained an elder by Bishop Simpson in 1874. He served the followingcharges: Bronson two years, Cannonsburg two years, Charlevoix three years, Boyne City two years, Ironton two years, Manton one year, Norwood three years, and East Jordan two years. His health began to fail in 1888, and in 1889 he was compelled to ask for a superannuate relation. He was a godly man, a forceful preacher of gospel, and a very faithfulpastor. He had several sweeping revivals during his ministry. He was the father of eight children; of these only three survive him, one sonand two daughters. The last two years of his life were spent on a farm near Boyne Falls. Here it was the writer’s privilege to visit him several times, and to find him growing old in most sweet and tender piety. From his recentcorrespondence with the biographical secretary we read, "Jesus is dearer, heaven is nearer and victory is in sight. God bless the church and God bless the members of the Michigan Conference. Brethren be faithful to the end. For years his heart was weak, and he died unexpectedly at nine o’clock on Sunday evening, March 17. Funeral services, conducted by the writer, and the Masonic fraternity of Elmira, Michigan, were held in the Methodist Church of Boyne Falls, Michigan, on Tuesday, March 19, at three PM; and on Wednesday, March 20, the remains were taken to Charlevoix for interment. He lived 78 years, 9 months, 16 days. Barnabus Horton Whitman: Born: 1 Jan 1828, Died: 17 Mar 1907, Buried: 20 Mar 1907. The following Last Will and Testament was found in the Probate Court records for Charlevoix County, Michigan. The Probate packet (Recorded in Liber 15, Page 164) is dated 31 March 1908 and pertains to the Estate of Reverend Barnabus Horton Whitman.Reverend Whitman was residing in Elmira, Otsego County, Michigan at the time that the actual Will waswritten and witnessed. However, as his death occurred in Charlevoix County, the Will was probated there at the time at that time. Barnabus and his wife ran a store in Elmira for many years, but later moved to a farm near Boyne Falls which is where he died. Reverend Whitman and his children all have roots in both Charlevoix and Otsego Counties as they frequently made visits toboth family and friends even after the residences changed. Most of their children married men and women from the two counties as well. The witnesses noted here are both relatives of Reverend Whitman’s. Addie Wells Chamberlain Dupes was the younger sister of Barnabus’ wife, Mary Jane Wells Whitman. Stephen J. Lemons was the nephew of Mary Jane Wells Whitman who had been raised by Addie Chamberlain Dupes- growing up within the Whitman home or nearby. Stephen often referred to his cousins, the Whitman children, as if they were his siblings. At the time of his death, Probate Court records indicate that the following are the only known legatees and heirs:

MRS. MARY JANE WHITMAN Mrs. Mary Whitman, who was the widow of Reverend Barnabus Horton Whitman, for 20 years as itinerant in the Michigan Conference, died at the Clark Home, Grand Rapids, January 2, 1929, having been a resident of the Home for a little more than a year.She was born April 29, 1842, her parents being Francis "Frank" Wells and Jane Miller Wells. Her ministry with Brother Whitman in the Conference was rendered on the following charges: Bronson, Orange, Alaska, Cannonsburg, Charlevoix, Boyne City, Manton, Norwood, East Jordan. Brother Whitman died in 1907, since which time Mrs. Whitman had made her home at Boyne City, where they had had a pleasant pastorate. During her last illness at the Home she was a great and patient sufferer. She is survived be a son Elmer A. Whitman of Flint, and an aged sister at Boyne City. Her body was taken to Boyne City by Reverend J.B. Peatling, the Superintendent of the Home, where he conducted appropriate services and later it was laid to rest in the cemetery at Charlevoix, by the side of her husband. Religion: Methodist. Buried January 1929, Brookside Cemetery, Charlevoix, MI. 86 years, 8 months, 4 days.

A man of thorough business integrity, was well known and highly respected by everyone. The death of this respected citizen casts a gloom over the entire community. (*Note: William Linus Whitman, son of Johnathan S. and Rosa Amanda Horton Whitman, died Monday March 5, 1888 at the age of 58 years. He is buried in Adams Cemetery, Branch County on Smoker Rd.) William lived 58years, 5 months and 27 days.
