[edit] Advisory on Elizabeth RussellCaution: Some sources claim that this Elizabeth Russell married Alexander Gilbreath on 21 Feb. 1809 in Knox County, Tennessee, but based upon other sources, it appears to be a different Elizabeth Russell that Galbraith married.
[edit] Information on Elizabeth RussellFrom Weldon James Birdwell (26 Jan 1999): George Birdwell's father, Joseph Birdwell, died Aug. 1, 1801. His mother, Rachel Russell Birdwell, married Lewis Hill on July 18, 1803 in Knox Co., Tennessee. From the records kept by the Rev. Russell Birdwell of Gainesville, Texas, it is seen that the James and Andrew Russell who were appointed Guardians of the minor children of Joseph Birdwell, were brothers of Rachel and uncles of the minor children. George Birdwell's wife, Elizabeth A. Russell, was the daughter of Matthew and Jane Henderson Russell who settled in Knox Co., fifteen miles southwest of Knoxville, in a deep curve of the Holston River known as Horse Shoe Bend, sometime between 1785 and 1790. Her grandfather was Andrew Russell, Jr., a weaver by trade, who married Elizabeth Mitchell, both of whom were born in Augusta Co., Va. Andrew (note: this is probably the birthdate for Andrew Russell, Jr., brother of Matthew Russell) was baptized Oct. 28, 1740 by the Rev. Craig and his will is recorded in Knox Co., Tennessee, in 1803. Her great grandfather was Andrew Russell, Sr., who married Florence Henderson. Andrew Russell, Sr.'s parents are not known; but from the books, "Tennessee Cousins" and "Chalkleys, Augusta County, Va." it is shown that Florence Henderson's family had been in Virginia as early as 1660, at least two generations before her. |
