  4. ↑ «i»Surname means somebody who is a leper. Was in all possibility given as a mock name to those who was against the Roman -Catholic faith at the time. Stamvader is Jacques Malan of Merindol close to Abignon in the Province of La Motte-d'Aigues in southern France. Jacques was borne in about 1672 and died circa 1742.

    Arrived in the Cape in 1688 on the ship Berg China. On 18 October 1694 he became the owner of the farm "La Motte" in Franschoek. He sold the farm in 1719. In 1709 he purchased the farm "Morgenster", one of the 4 portions of the farm "Welgelegen" from Adrian van der Stel. He married Elisabeth le Long (widow of Jean Jourdan) in 1699. Seven children from the marriage.«/i»
