Notes:

Lillard name in France 1415- The first reference under King Henry V of England when Thomas Lollard was knighted by Henry V for his gallant bravery in the Battle of Agincourt 1415. During the English invasion of France 1420 Sir Thomas Lollard was supposed to have met a French lady of gentile birth, this romance led to marriage, as a result Sir Thomas Lollard decided not to return to Britain and gave up his knightly rights as well as changing his surname to Lillard. Thomas Lillard lived in the town of Samur on the Loire River. There is about 4 generations between Thomas Lillard and his direct descendant Jasper Lillard.

Jasper Lillard and Miss Issacs Jasper Lillard was a vine grower and in addition to tending vines owned and operated a line of boats up and down the Loire river, from Angers to Nantes, and from Angers to Tours. His fathers name is unknown. He married a Miss Issacs (first name unknown). Miss Issacs gave up her religion to marry Jasper as he was a devout Huguenot. They had at least 5 son

Moise Lillard and Lilli Balssa Moise one of Jasper Lillard's sons married Lilli Balssa. With the death of Jasper, Noise took over the ownership of the boat line along the Loire River. In 1598 King Henry IV gave equal rights to all those who practiced the Huguenot religion. However in 1685 Louis XIV revoked these rights, and all privileges and worship was forbidden to the Huguenots except in Alsace. Goods were confiscated and churches burned. All children were taken from their parents and instructed in the Roman Catholic faith. At this time Moise Lillard sold his vineyards and moved his family to Nantes. Noise and his wife wanted to stay in France and face the issues, he decided his elder son should stay with them. They decided however to send John Lillard and Benjamin Lillard to America.

John and Benjamin Lillard John and Benjamin Lillard came to America and settled in Virginia in 1685. John was around 16 or 17 years old at the time. Benjamin a few years younger. It is thought they landed at Fredricksburg and then moved south to near Richmond, where they took land along the James River. Benjamin drowned in this river.
