Elizabeth Marie (Krumrine) Hubbard, 91, departed this world on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at 8:36 a.m. at Homewood at Plum Creek. She was the wife of Willard D. Hubbard, who died March 27, 1989. Elizabeth was born the second of two daughters to Charles M. and Cora B. (Trostle) Krumrine, on March 23, 1923, in Hanover. She came from a very close-knit family and grew up surrounded by cousins, aunts, and uncles, and a host of friends - a tradition she carried throughout her entire life. Elizabeth graduated from Eichelberger High School in 1941 and from Gettysburg College in 1945 with a BA degree in Physics and minors in Chemistry and Mathematics. This was during World War II and the War Manpower Commission was recruiting students to work for the U.S. Government. After being offered a position with the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) in Washington, D.C. and being fully investigated by the FBI for a top-secret clearance, Elizabeth went to work on the Manhattan Project - the only woman chosen to be on the team. It was not until after the first atomic bomb was detonated in Japan that Elizabeth and others on the team were told by the White House exactly what the project was that they had been working on. After the Manhattan Project was terminated, Elizabeth spent time analyzing meteors, an anchor from one of Christopher Columbus's ships, 'UFO' material, coins from ancient times, etc. Elizabeth married her husband Willard on June 16, 1956, and they moved to a home located at 6700 Pawtucket Road in Bethesda, Md. In 1973 they moved again to 7205 Orkney Parkway, also in Bethesda, Md. When her husband, Willard, retired from the Food and Drug Administration in 1981, he and Elizabeth moved back to Pennsylvania, residing in Elizabeth's hometown of Hanover. They enjoyed eight wonderful years together there before Willard passed away. At that point, Elizabeth and her sister, Phyllis, took up residence together and enjoyed each other and their mutual interests until Phyllis passed away in 1996. Elizabeth was an amazing human being. She lived life to the fullest and enriched every soul she touched. Her life was long and successful, and she will truly be missed. A service to celebrate the life of Elizabeth Hubbard will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, with Pastor Robert L. Hoover, Jr. officiating.
Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover.
