  1. Source:Wyman, Thomas Bellows. Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1629-1818, Vol. 2, p. 626, says Robert Long m. Elizabeth Hawkins. According to Wyman, Robert's death is based on a letter from Life and Letters of John Winthrop (Vol. ii, p. 184), that "Mr. Long who m. Capt. Hawkins daughter is dead." But that same record is used in other sources to estimate the death of Person:Nathaniel Long (2) who is also supposed to have married Elizabeth Hawkins. Which Mr. Long married Elizabeth Hawkins?

Torrey identifies the maiden name of Robert's wife as Hopkins/Hawkins. But none of his sources even mention Hopkins as a possibility. He appears to be guessing at other names that could be mistaken as Hawkins.

Robert Long, jr., s. Robert and Sarah (Taylor), b. Jan 17, 1619, St. Albans, England, came to Boston with father in 1635, m. Elizabeth, D. Capt. Hawkins (Possibly Abraham and Elizabeth Hawkins of Charlestown, and settled in malden. He predeceased his father, and died in 1648 at Barbadoes. His only child according to Wyman was as follows: Samuel, b. 4/23/47, Charlestown.

Back to Torrey: under Nathaniel Long, he cites NEHGR 68, p. 178: "On 17 October 1649, before William Aspinwall, Notary and Tabellion Publick, etc., appeared Mr. Adam Winthrop of Boston, New England, husband of Elizabeth, late wife of Nathaniel Longe, late of Boston, merchant, and made Edward Hutchinson of Boston, merchant, his attorney to receive goods due in Barbados to Elizabeth his wife or to her late husband Nathaniel Longe.

"(According to Savage's Gen. Dict., Adam Winthrop married secondly Elizabeth, daughter to Thomas Hawkins. If this is so, she was a widow at the time of her marriage to Adam Winthrop. His first wife, Elizabeth Glover, died in 1648. Cf. Aspinwall Notarial Records, p. 225.)"

Middlesex Probate Vol. 28, p. 11 : "An Inventory of Goods appertayning to Robert Long of Charlstown Junier deceased being apprised by us Richard Russell & Francis Norton the 3'd day of the 8th moneth 1651" [3 Oct 1651], includes "3 butts of suger", "three buts yet at Barbadoes in the hands of mr Riches agent": £201:18:06, by Richard Russell, Francis Norton.

The evidence has some ambiguity, both people showing some connection to Barbadoes, but the fact that John Winthrop wrote the report of Mr. Long's death indicating an acquaintance, and then Adam Winthrop married a year later, and Robert's inventory was three years after the death report, instead of the typical month or two, it seems likely that Wyman's identification of Robert Long's wife as Elizabeth Hawkins is incorrect, and it appears that all the following sources all appear to simply copy/repeat his error.
