Facts and Events
Naming conventions, prior to the last half of the 19th century, were different than they are today. In the first half of the 19th century, and before, a woman, upon marriage, would keep her given name and middle name and exchange her maiden surname for her husband's surname. For example -- in 1825, Ann Young Mason married John Hudson. After her marriage, she was called Ann Young Hudson (NOT Ann Mason Hudson). I have seen a few instances where a woman, in the 18th century, followed naming patterns as we use them today -- making her maiden name, after marriage, her new middle name, but this is very rare. This Elizabeth's maiden name might be HAWKINS, but I hate to assume it until some sort of proof is found. |
