Research Notes

Who are the parents of this Elizabeth?

THEORY A = Edward Hall and Milly Unknown. Source: many published genealogies. Status: DISPROVED.

  • cos1776 Note: Edward and Milly Hall did have a daughter named Elizabeth Hall (b 1796), but aside from the fact that she is 20 years older, the problem with this theory is that their daughter is also known to have married James Welch and can be found living in his household in Clark County, KY (1850) and Platte County, MO (1860) while our Elizabeth was with her husband James Reffitt in Montgomery County, KY. See their pages for more proof against this theory.

THEORY B = Edward Hall and Amelia Unknown. Source: Family Tradition. Status: LIKELY.

  • Family Notes of daughter Gertrude (Prickett) Leach as posted to Rootsweb [1] : "... My mother (Anna Hodge Prickett) always said all she knew was that her great grandfather and mother were Edward and Amelia Hall and that all she knew."
  • cos1776 Note: Edward Hall appears in the 1820 & 1830 censuses 1,2 in Montgomery County with family members that appear to support wife Amelia and daughter Elizabeth. By the 1840 census, Edward Hall is likely deceased, as wife Amelia Hall is listed as HOH, living alone with one Free Colored Male.

Where was Elizabeth born?

cos1776 Note: Census records repeatedly state that she was born in Virginia, however her daughter Amanda's marriage record says she was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky. It seems unlikely that the census takers would have taken the time to record a different location for Elizabeth each time unless they were being told that specific information for her. Therefore, a birthplace of Virginia is listed as preferred on this page.

Was her daughter Anna (aka Nancy) born out of wedlock?

  • According to granddaughter Gertrude (Prickett) Leach, Elizabeth Hall had daughter Anna "Nancy" out of wedlock and prior to her marriage to James Reffitt. This theory is supported by the 1946 death certificate of Anna's daughter (Anna (Hodge) Prickett)) on which her mother's surname is listed as "Hall". The informant is unknown at this time. However, one problem with this theory is that other grandchildren either did not know this information or did not support this theory. That same year, a 1946 death certificate was issued for George W Hodge, son of Anna, on which granddaughter Anna (Hodge) Noel listed the name of her grandmother as "Anna Reffitt".
  • It has also been speculated that the father of Anna Hall/Reffitt may have been a Cooper from the family of Coopers living near the Hall family in the 1840 census. More research is needed.
