Elizabeth Godfrey's origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on 25th July 1682 when she was married at Baldock in Hertfordshire to a man named Anthony Meager. He was 35 when they married, but she must have been quite a bit younger judging by when she was having children. Anthony was from the village of Benington, a few miles south of Baldock. They returned there after their marriage and had twelve children baptised at Benington between 1682 and 1707, including twins in 1694.

Anthony died in 1719, aged 72. Elizabeth outlived him by nearly five years and died in 1724, being buried at Benington where she had lived for over forty years on 18th June 1724.
