The age of the younger daughter, Jane, in 1851, infers that John Arthur, Elizabeth's husband died in 1849 or 1850. This date is before the start of civil registration in Scotland.

Glasgow was in the midst of a population explosion in the 1840s. What records were made were kept by churches, and many people may not have attended church on a regular basis. Thirty-five years ago the writer saw the original of the record of John and Elizabeth's marriage. It was just a line giving their names and the date in a paper-backed journal or ledger.
