Elizabeth Bentman was baptised on 29th February 1756 at Shillington in Bedfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Bentman, formerly Hill, and her husband William Bentman, a labourer.

When Elizabeth was just over a year old, her mother died, being buried at Shillington on 22nd March 1757. Elizabeth's father was therefore left with Elizabeth and her brother James to look after.

Four years later, William remarried. His second wife was Mary Pakes, who thus became Elizabeth's stepmother. They married on 16th February 1761 at Hexton, a neighbouring parish to Shillington. They stayed in Hexton after their marriage, having three children baptised there between 1761 and 1769.

Elizabeth was married in Hexton on 25th May 1775, aged 19, to a James Berry, who was living in the neighbouring parish of Barton at the time of their marriage.

They settled in Barton, where they had four children baptised between 1775 and 1784.

Elizabeth died in 1799, aged 42. James survived her by sixteen years.
