Mrs. Geo. Bowen died Wednesday morning at her home southwest of Eureka, aged 87 years. She had been ill for several months. and was taken seriously ill about a week ago.

Funeral service will be held tomorrow afternoon Mrs. from the home. Interment will be in star Cemetery. (From the "Eureka Herald" 21 Feb 1929, page 1)


Mrs. Elizabeth Bowen, nee Axford, daughter of William and Sofia Axford, was born at McGreger, Clayton County, Iowa, August 23, 1841. She died February 20, 1929, at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 28 days. Hee husband died twenty-three years ago.

While she was yet a child her parents moved to Wisconsin. On New Years's Day, 1861, she was married to Mr. George E. Bowen at Westfield, Wisconsin. In June 1867, Mr. and Mrs. Bowen moved to Kansas and settled on a farm in Otter Creek township, Greenwood County, where she lived sixty-two years until her death.

Mr. and Mrs. Bowen were the parents of seven children, one daughter died in infancy. The remaining children are Mrs. Mary E. Rossel, Moscow, Kans., Mrs. Lydia Rutter, Piedmont, Kansas; George, of Chicago, Illinois, S. Planklinton, South Dakota; William E. and Asa M. of Eureka, Kansas. Mrs. Bowen is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. M.S. Knox, Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. J.M. Stout, Aberdeen, Washington. She had thirty-four grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Bowen was in many respects a remarkable woman. Her life meant much to the community in which she lived. She taught the first school in Otter Creek township. She was a Sunday School teacher and acted as a nurse in time of sickness. She was also a spiritual guide in the community. She was a very kindhearted woman and was held in great esteem by her children, relatives and friends. One of her granddaughters writes, "The death of Grandma Bowen as she was best known among friends and neighbors marks the passing of a Greenwood county pioneer. Hers was a life of unselfish service to her family and friends who will deeply feel her absence."

The funeral services were held conducted by Rev. Hjortholm of Eureka, Friday, February 22. Interment was made in the Star Cemetery. (From the "Eureka Herald" 25 February 1929, page 1)
