From A History of The Barnes Families in Jackson Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania by Beatrice Barnes McClelland:
“On December 5, 1839, he (John J. Barnes) was married to Eliza Jane Montgomery, a daughter of James and Sarah Fulton Montgomery. Eliza Jane was born in November, 1819, in Sandycreek Township, Mercer County. “Eliza Jane, as she told this story to her grandchildren, had very long hair – it reached the floor. For some reason she has this long hair cut and was offered five dollars for it, but she refused the offer and kept the hair. When {the family} moved across the county line into Venango County in July 1847, somehow the hair was forgotten and when they went back to get it, it had been stolen, never to be heard of again. By this time four of their children had been born. They lived on this farm the rest of their married lives. Eight more children were added to this family.”
Their children were (Boy); George Armstrong; James Montgomery; Archibald; John Fulton; William Albert; James; Thomas Jefferson; Matthew; Oliver Washington; Eliza Jane; Sara Gertrude
