Person:Eliza Horner (1)

Eliza Horner was baptised on 19th April 1811 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of William and Grace Horner.

She was married on 27th October 1828 to a widower named William Edwards, whose first wife had died eight months earlier. He had two sons from his first marriage. In 1831 the younger of Eliza's two stepsons died, aged three. Eliza and William do not appear to have had any further children.

The 1841 census finds Eliza and William living at Lagness in the parish of Pagham. They later moved to Oving, where they ran the White Horse Inn, appearing there in the 1851 census.

William died in 1853. He and Eliza had been married for 24 years. Eliza continued to run the White Horse alone for over a year after William's death, before transferring the license to her brother-in-law, William's brother James.

Three years after William's death Eliza married again. Her second husband was George Baker, who was about eighteen years her junior; when they married she was about 45 whilst he was about 27. They married in his native parish of Lyminster (often spelled Leominster at the time). A newspaper announcement appeared in the Sussex Advertiser, describing Eliza as "widow of the late Mr Edwards, and sister to Mrs Collins, of Teddington House, Leominster", suggesting that Eliza's sister was quite well known in the area.

The 1861 census finds Eliza and George living at the Spotted Cow at Angmering.

Eliza died aged 58. She was buried at Angmering on 7th April 1870. George outlived her; he appears in the 1871 census living at nearby Rustington.

   This baptism has been linked to the Eliza Horner who married William Edwards and then George Baker on the basis that her second marriage names her father as William Horner, whilst in the censuses she consistently claimed to have been born at Pagham around 1811.
