Ogden M. Alger, her father, bought 40,000 acres from the Kalamazoo land office in 1853. In 1850, he was in Antwerp, Van Buren County, in 1860 in Bloomingdale. By 1870, he had moved to Waverly, in Van Buren County. Eliza's mother was Harriet Luddington. They are buried in Robinson Cemetery.

Eliza gained another son: Clarence Wells (Willis C.) Alger, b. 16 MAR 1887 in Chicago, Illinois. An application states his parents were Ogden William Alger and Eliza Mae Alger. He is listed as a senate page in the 1901 session of the SD State Legislature in a Rootsweb database extracting material from Doane Robinson's "History of South Dakota" Vol 1, ch LXXV, p. 408-425. This must be how he got the connections to get an appointment to West Point. He died 1959 in NY.

I am looking for information on Eliza Alger who lived in Pierre S.D. 3rd Ward during the 1900 census. She had living with her one daughter and three sons: Irene born Apr 1875, Ogden W. born May 1877, Rolla H. born June 1879, and Wills C. born Mar 1887. All the children were born in Michigan. According to the census Eliza was widowed and was born in May 1854 in Michigan. Her parents were born in NY and her husband was born in Michigan. She had 7 children with only 4 living in 1900. In the 1910 census Eliza is not shown living in Pierre S.D. but Ogden and Rolla H. still are. I am a descendant of Ogden and Josephine Alger through their son Wells. I am stuck with Eliza she is the furthest I can trace my family back.

Further proof of Eliza's paternity from Milbrey Otto Burgett

His line, the Descendants of Burghardt, shows David White Burgett married to Lydia Priscilla Alger, b. 24 Feb 1840 d. 26 Apr 1879 in Columbia Twp., daughter of Ogden and Harriet (Luddington). Their fourth child was George Valdo Burgett, b. 17 Jan 1870, d. 6 July 1887 in Kalamazoo.
