Elithe was born on the Shiffler Family homestead, in the original house, located on the northwest corner of Section 26 in Woodbridge Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan. This house was a three-room temporary home that was used while the main farm house and buildings were under construction. The original house was later converted to a grain storage building and it still stands today. She was the eldest of two children.
