"407. Capt. Elisha Phelps, b. Simsbury, Ct., 17 Oct., 1737, m. 10 Aug., 1760, Rosetta Owen, (daughter of John5 and Esther (Humphrey) Owen), b. Windsor, Ct., 25 Aug., 1742. She m. for 2nd husband, Caleb Hotchkiss, whose first wife was a half-sister of his 2nd wife [Caleb had only one wife; Rosetta had no half-sisters.]. Widow Rosetta died 4 Oct., 1798."
Capt. Phelps settled in Simsbury, where he was a merchant; was appointed Capt. by Gov. Trumbull in 1774, was engaged in the Revolutionary War, and was actively engaged with several others in arranging for the taking of Fort Ticonderoga. He was appointed by Gov. Trumbull as commissary for Conn. troops in the Northern department, 8 June. 1775. Says Conn. Soldiers of the Revolution, p. 32, in account for moneys paid out of the public treasury of the Colony of Conn.: '£10, May, 1775, to Capt. Phelps to ride from Ticonderoga to the Congress at Watertown.' 'Continuing in service under Gen. Schuyler and Gen. Montgomery, reported to have died 14 July, 1776.' He died in Albany."
