Marriage date to EBB--Early Middle Tenn. Marriages, Sistler, v.1, Grooms, 1988. From Smith Co. newspaper historical series, Chapter XXI: " . . . in the same section not far apart, lived four brothers, Dowell. They were sons of Nehemiah Dowell, one of the earliest settlers on the upper waters of Mulherrin Creek. The oldest of these, Elisha Dowell, moved many years ago to the state of Missouri." Birth month and year from his deposition 12 Oct 1857 in Elias Dowell, Jr., et al vs. Francis Dowell, et al. Elisha moved to Smith County, Tennessee with his Father in 1825 (per Chancery Court records, 12 Oct 1857). Also, lived in Wilson County, Tennessee. Elisha and Elizabeth migrated to Pike County, Missouri around 1858- 1859 from Tennessee. (Per statement made 12 Oct 1857, he planned to start to Missouri the following Thursday.) They brought with them 4 of their 10 children. Those children were: Elias Bailis (age 25) and his new bride, Lutisha GARRETT; Susanna (age 21); John D. (age 16); and Francis (age 11). After 1860, they moved from Pike County to Florida Salt River bottoms area, Monroe County, Missouri. 1860 Census: Elisha in Pike County, Spencer Township, Missouri; owns property value $1300; living in household is Elisha age 53; wife Elizabeth, their children: Susanna age 22; John D. age 18; Francis age 11. 1870 Census: Elisha in Monroe County, Jefferson Township, Missouri; living in household is Elisha age 62; wife Elizabeth age 63; their son Elias B. age 37; Elias Bailis' children: William age 11; Elisha age 10; John W. age 9; Elizabeth L. age 7; Son-in-law William F. DOWELL age 31; their daughter and William's wife Susanna age 33; William and Susanna's children: Elizabeth age 3; Mary V. age 1. Obituary from Paris Mercury, 10 Jul 1877: Elisha DOWELL, who lived near Florida, in this county, died on Tuesday last, after a brief and severe illness of cramp colic. Mr. DOWELL has lived in this county for many years, coming originally from Virginia. He was an honorable, upright man. A wife and six children mourn his loss, all of whom have our warmest sympathies in this sad affliction. Obituary from Monroe County Appeal 06 Jul 1877: Elisha DOWELL, an old citizen of this community, died on Tuesday last, after a brief illness. He was well respected and will be sadly missed by his many friends. Died age 68 yrs 9 mos 23 das. Middle name may be Lee based on Death Certificate of his son, John DOWELL. References
