  4. The death record of Elisha names parents Samuel and Abigail but birthplace Waltham (Waltham is also specified as his birthplace in the death record of one of his children). Not only is Elisha's birth not recorded in Waltham, no birth is recorded to a couple Samuel and Abigail Brown.

On the other hand, this death record appears to match the Elisha Brown of Stockbridge, born to Samuel and Abigail (Burr) Brown on a date that fits the age at death. This Samuel was from Watertown, joined the Waltham Church about 1725, but was dismissed to Leicester about 1740 and later Stockbridge, so Elisha b. 1771 himself was born 3 decades after his father left Waltham, and it is hard to see how he could represent it as such?

Waltham VRs, p. 20, show the birth of Elisha Brown 1 May 1772, to Joseph and Abigail Brown. No probate for the father has been found. No further information on Elisha is found in Bond, p. 126.

NYGBR, Vol. 72, p. 327, appears to suggest the Elisha Brown of Stockbridge m. 1795 Elizabeth Woodbridge and died in Dayton, Ohio 1853, but the marriage record is not found (here) and the gravestone gives his birth year as 1770, not 1771. Just enough to cast doubts on this.

Both men have appropriate entries in the 1850 census (Dayton, Ohio and Warwick, Mass.).
