He practiced at Halifax Courthouse and his plantation home wasnear Meadsville. He was known as Elisha, Jr. until his uncledied in 1850. It will be noted that Elisha Jr. was attorney forhis uncle, Armistead Barksdale, in the settlement of hisfathers's estate in Tennessee. It is coincidence tha He bore the identcal name of one of hisuncles and that both attained the same rank in the HalifaxMilitia. In 1832 he was 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry and ensignin the 69th Reg. of Militia in 1834. He is listed in the 1850 and 1860 Slave Schedules as havingowned more than 50 slaves.
