BIOGRAPHY: Genealogy of the Bigelow Family of America Gilman Bigelow Howe Worcester, Mass. Printed by Charles Hamilton No. 311 Main Street 1890 - Page 184 282-734. Elisha Bigelow of Batavia, N. Y., son of Josiah R. and Sarah (Culver) Bigelow, was born in Guilford, Vt., June 27, 1796. At the age of four years he removed with his father to Pompey, N. Y., where his father died Dec. 17, 1803. His mother dying in 1806, he was bound as an apprentice to Dea., Levi Jerome of Pompey until he was twenty-one, when he was eighteen he served in the army, and was stationed at Sackett's Harbor in 1814. He married, April 8, 1817, Miss Maria Reed, and soon moved to Constanitia, N. Y., where he cleared up a farm and lived until 1826, when he moved to Bethany, where his wife died in 1833. He married second, Miss Harriet Jerome, and moved to Batavia, N. Y., where he died Feb. 24, 1883, aged 86 years. He united with the Presbyterian Church in 1830 and held the position of ruling elder in the church for thirty-three years; a quiet and Christian man. |
