Facts and Events
Grandma has a little finger ring of his. Eli was supposedly the illegitimate son of a Tuckahoe Indian woman. Eli was from the Christianburg, Va area and served in the Civil War. Per Grandma, Eli had 2 children besides Ann. Transcribed verbatim by Alison Martin on 5/17/99 from handwritten notes taken by Margaret Tompkins: "Eli Mullens to date (6-15-90) [I] know no more than Eli was the illegitimate son of a Tuckahoe Indian woman; name unknown; who married a man Mullens/ (Va area presumed near Pearisburg) Eli became a bond servant to a family named Franklin. He was in the Civil War. (records enclosed) His wife the former Nancy Sartin was said to have T.B. and [was] an invalid later. During the War one of Eli and Nancy's son took diphtheria. Eli got a furlough, but when he had to return to the army, his son died, his wife had to dig the grave and bury the child herself. During all this Eli's records show he deserted. His family was unable to care for themselves. Nancy Sartin was said to be a granddaughter of the Canterbury's, first settlers in VA (told to me by Carrie Smith my grandmother)" 1850 Census, Giles County, Virginia, District 20, 22 July 1850 55-45 Eli Mullins 29 MW Farmer, $200 Real, Born in Va, Can not read/write Nancy B 22 FW Born Va James W. 3 MW John D. 1 MW 56-46 David Sartin 41or47 MW Farmer $500 Real, Born in Va Nancy 40 FW Born Va, Can not read/write Aalin 21 FW Sally A. 17 Polly 15 Disy E. 11 FW Thomas J. 9 MW Eliza J. 5 FW References
