Eli and his brother Ethelbert have their info on a shared gravestone in the Sugar Grove Cemetery. It says that both Eli and Ethelbert were sons of Wm and E Jones and that Eli was born in East Tenn but does not give a birth location for Ethelbert. Eli's birth date engraved on his gravestone is Sep 3, 1809 but that date is very suspect and is challenged. Eli's father, John, was born in 1802; and two known siblings were born in 1826 and 1833. I will suggest that his birth date be closer to 3 Sep 1819. The gravestone says Eli was born in East Tennessee and we know his brother Ethelbert was born in Ohio by 1826. As Eli died in 1835, there is no census record to use to estimate his birth year.
