Eleanor was a cousin to her husband and his second wife. She had eight children with him. After his death she married John Carington. See attached sources for both the marriage agreement and marriage. ELEANOR BRERETON was born about 1476 of Cheshire, England, to Lord Ralph Brereton (1454-1500) and Lady Emma Carrington (1448-1520.) She married Sir William Brereton about 1508 of Clifton, Cheshire, England. Eleanor Brereton died November 1567, Malpas, Cheshire, England, age 91. Eleanor was a cousin to her husband and his second wife. She had eight children with him. After his death she married John Carington. Eleanor Brereton was born in 1498.[1]
An Indenture being a demise by Ranulph Eggerton, esquire, and Richard Delves and Robert Fouleshurste, clerks, John Aston, knight, and William Chetwyn and John Cotes, esquires, feoffees to the use of the said Ranulph, and at his request, to Eleanor Eggerton, late the wife of John Eggerton, esquire, deceased, of all their messuages, &c. in Betteley and Drayton, cos. Stafford and Salop, now or late in the tenure and occupation of the said Ranulf, formerly of John Denston, with two crofts in Betteley called 'Elmer Riddynges,' of Thomas Blore and others (named), and of a meadow in Drayton aforesaid called 'Churton Medowe,' and of a burgage there called Seynt Marie Hall'; also demise to her of all their messuages, &c. in Forde, Uncote, Grenehong', Knyghton, Oneley, Sydway and Butterton, co. Stafford; also of all their messuages, &c. in Shokclage, Farnedon, Pikmere, Crue, Neuton nigh Malpas, Spurstowe and Haghton, co. Chester; also of certain messuages and tenements in Balterley, co. Stafford, to the yearly value of 3l. 12d. and in Caldecote, co. Chester, to the yearly value of 53s. 4d.; to hold to the said Eleanor for her life with reversion to themselves to the use of the said Ranulf in tail male with successive remainders in default to the use of Robert Eggerton in tail male and to the use of the right heirs of John Eggerton for ever; warranty by Ranulf Eggerton; attorneys to deliver seisin, Humphrey Wilbrame and Morgan Broghton. 12 April, 9 Henry VIII. Five Seals. Memorandum, endorsed, of livery of seisin, 16 April in the said year by Humfrey Wilbraham to Owen Brereton, attorney of the said Eleanor, at Oneley, co. Stafford, at Grenehongur and at Neuton nygh Malpas, in the name of all the lands in the counties of Stafford, Salop and Chester respectively.[2]
Dame Elynor Brereton, widow of sir William Brereton, purchased the manor of Ley from Richard and Margaret Cotton and settled it on her son Richard Brereton upon his marriage in 36 Henry VIII [1544] to Thomasine, the daughter of George Ashley of Ashley.[3]
A Counterpart indenture, made 21 June, 5 Elizabeth [1563], being the memorandum of an agreement between Sir Rauffe Egerton of Wryne Hyll, cos. Stafford and Chester, knight, and Robert Cowper, of Rannsall in the parish of Betteley, co. Stafford, 'yeman,' for an exchange, viz. Sir Rauffe grants to the said Robert the reversion, expectant on the decease of Dame Eleanor Brereton, widow, of a cottage, &c. in Eannsall aforesaid, in the occupation of Katharine Heywood, in exchange for the arable land of the said Robert, in the occupation of Rauf Bloore in a field called the 'Wryne,' cos. Stafford and Chester, near the town or hamlet of 'the Wryne Hyll'; also release by the said Sir Rauf, in consideration of the said exchange, of 12d. rent from the land, &c. of the said Robert in Betteley and in Rannsall and Wryne Hyll, &c. Signature of 'Robert Cowper.' English. Seal. Witnesses' names endorsed.[2]
