He was a graduate of Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana and later took his Theological course at Lane Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was an able preacher, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Archer, Florida at the time of his death. He married Ruth Angell Bowman and to this union two sons were born.
