The Wiatt Family of Virginia, by Alexander Lloyd Wiatt, page 15, 16, 17.Was born at Boxley, Kent, EN about 1621. Came to Virginia when his uncle,Sir Francis Wyatt was sent to serve his second term as Governor of thecolony of Virginia in 1639. He was referred to in early records as EdwardWiatt, Gent, and was mentioned April 23, 1646 as administrator of theextate of John Clarke of York CO whose widow, Hannah Clarke, herepresented in 1652.By Sept. 3, 1663 he had acquired 850 acres at Middle Plantation(Williamsburg), which formerly belonged to John Clarke.On July 20, 1662 "Edward Wiatt, Gent." obtained a patent for 1,230 acresin Gloucester CO "upon the Peankatank River" for the transportation of 25persons. This property confirmed the gift of land in the Piankatank areamade to Edward Wiatt October 29, 1655 by Pindavako, the protector of theyoung King of Chiskoyack Indians.In 1667, with his wife Jane, Edward sold the Clarke tract to GeorgePoindexter and Otto Thorpe of Middle Platation.The Wiatt Plantation on the Piankatank was named Boxley for the Parish inKent, England, and was later divided into Old Upton, New Upton and Oakley.
