In 1918 he was the manager of the Garrett Fire Insurance Co. inKalamazoo, MI. He had blue eyes and gray hair. Who's Who in Kalamazoo- 29 Jan 1940 In Kalamazoo's "Who's Who" is one man who has followed such widelyseparated vocations as engineering, insurance sales, andmanufacturing. " I started to study engineering while helping carry tape in the cityengineer's office, but soon changed that idea when I found that goodengineers were getting $2 a day," says Edward S. Wicks, 511 JohnStreet, in explaining why he left that occupation soon aftergraduating from the public schools here. After leaving the engineer's office, he owned the French Garmentcompany for 10 years, manufacturing ladies' underwear. In 1913 hesold out his factory and embarked in the insurance business. Heprospered in this and now heads the Wicks Insurance agency, 112 WestMichigan Ave. The esteem in which he is held by his competitors is known by the factthat he is chairman of the executive committee of the KalamazooAssociation of Insurance Agents. He is a member of the F. and A. M. and Knights of Pythias lodes andis active in the Rotary club. Cards are his favorite recreation andhe enjoys bridge and cribbage most. He like to read, but thetechnical matter of insurance journals takes up the most of hisreading time. Movies also are favorites in his recreation list. Mrs.Wicks says he used to be a good dancer. He was also a member of the Underwriters club of Kalamazoo, which heserved two years as president; the Syracuse Temple 37, Pythiansisters; the National Underwriters Assoc.; the Association ofInsurance Agents of Michigan; a charter member of the Lion's Club; andchairman of the Executive committee of the Kalamazoo Association ofInsurance Agents.
