Ed met Mary while she was visiting a girl friend who lived next tothe family business, Joseph Wellmeier & Sons. She came from the Piquaarea. It wasn't long before a romance blossomed. They were married inNovember of 1896 at St. Boniface Church in Piqua, Ohio. Leona rememberedher mother saying the Ed was a strong-willed person. She remembered hermother telling of her wedding day. It seems the parish priest wanted thewedding during the Children's mass; however, Ed's family and relationshipwould not be able to arrive that early in the day. He told the priest itwould have to be later in the day; the priest seemed to persist. Finally, Ed, came right out and said, 'This is my Wedding Day and I willget married when I want.' And so it was. The wedding took place laterso all of his family, relations and friends who had to take the TractionCar could be witness to the beautiful occasion. Edward and Mary resided at 1073 Linden Avenue, 'Linden Heights',Dayton, Ohio. They were blessed with eleven children: 5 boys and 6girls. They were members of St. Mary's Church until St. Anthony's Churchwas built in 1903. Edward began his career in the retail hardware and paint business in1895 with his father (Joseph Wellmeier & Sons). In 1910 he entered thebuilding business becoming one of Dayton's leading builders. Hedeveloped a large section of southeast Dayton, all of Wellmeier Avenue(named in his honor), and parts of Wilfred Avenue and Patterson Park. InDayton View, he developed areas on Philadelphia and Lexington Avenues. He was president of old Regal Coal and Builder's Supply Company, andpresident of Superior Coal and Supply Company until 1953. He foundedboth companies. The first all electrical Dayton home was built by him in 1923. Thehome was constructed on Santa Cruz Avenue (421). This particular homewas featured in the Third Annual Home Beautification Show along withthree others. This show was held from June 1st through the 8th in 1924.The general public was invited to take a tour of the homes; over 100,000persons viewed these homes. Edward had become a household name. The ads in the papers were full-paged and listed not only theirrealty company, but Wellmeier Brothers, who would furnish you withwallpaper, window shades, paints, varnish and finished hardware for yournew home; The Regal Coal and Builders Supply Company, suppliers of brickand roofing for the home of your choosing (cement, plaster and lime workalso done). Fifty houses in Highland Park plat and one hundred homes in Wellmeierplat had been built by Wellmeier Realty Company. Their homes featuredframe structures, modern throughout, with concrete basements. The second floor wasfinished in enamel and mahogany, and the first floor was oak. There was an exceedingly large breakfast room and kitchen combined and anexceptionally large bedroom at the front of the second floor. All of therooms are commodious. The house was heated by a hot air furnace and a'Uniflow' pump had been installed. A laundry had been provided for inthe basement. The Wellmeier Realty Company spent considerable time in the improvementof the property by opening streets, grading and paving and by theinstallation of electric lights, sewers, sidewalks and water mains. Eachof their homes are thoroughly equipped with every modern convenienceknown to the builders at the time. The two plats present one of the mostattractive residential districts of the city.
