Edward was in the Civil War in Co. E, 99th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and Co. C, 1st Infantry Regiment of M.M.F. He enlisted from Allen County. They were living around Rushmore at that time. It is said that his brothers, Thomas, John, and James also enlisted from Belmont County.

He enlisted on August 8, 1862, at the age of 26 for 3 years. He was mustered in on August 26, 1862. He was mustered out January 14, 1863, because there were so few left in his regiment.

On January 24, 1864, he re-enlisted in Mississippi Marine Brigade, which was transferred to Co. I, 50th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged January 20, 1865, at Vicksburg.

He fought in the following battles: November 19 & 20, Chicamauga; May 24, 1864, Kingstown, Georgia; May 26, 1864, Dallas; June 12, 1864, Lost Mountain, Georgia; June 14, 1864, Pine Mountain, Georgia; July 22, 1864, Hood First Sorter, Atlanta, Georgia; September 2, 1864, Siege of Atlanta, Georgia; November 30, 1864, Columbia, Tennessee; November 30, 1864, Franklin, Tennessee; December 15-20, 1864, Nashville, Tennessee; and December 20, 1864, Spring Hill, Tennessee.
