Edward Lewis Tullis (March 9, 1917 – October 6, 2005) was an American bishop of the United Methodist Church, and an advocate for women clergy.

Elected as a bishop in 1972, he presided over the Columbia, South Carolina episcopal area and then the Nashville, Tennessee episcopal area until his retirement in 1984. He also served on the Board of Managers, the General Board of Missions, the Board of Managers of the Board of Discipleship, and the General Council on Finance and Administration.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Tullis was a 1939 graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College and was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1939. Before his election to the episcopacy in 1972, Tullis served 35 years as a pastor in Methodist churches in Kentucky, during which time he was also a Chaplain in the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Tullis served as a trustee of twelve colleges and seminaries. He remained active in retirement and authored several books – First Sermons, Shaping The Church from the Mind of Christ and The Heart of Evangelism – and his penultimate book, The Birth of The Book, which evolved from his experience teaching adult Sunday School for the preceding twenty years at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church in Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. His last book was a history of the Magee Christian Education Foundation, of which he had been a director for 40 years.

From Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary web site (http://www.lpts.edu/News-Events/article.asp?intID=23): Bishop Edward L. Tullis was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and educated in Kentucky, earning degrees from Kentucky Wesleyan College (1939) and Louisville Seminary (1947).

As a Methodist minister for 35 years, he served numerous churches throughout Kentucky including Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church in Louisville. During his pastorates he also taught at Kentucky Wesleyan College (1947-1949), was instructor in Methodist Studies at LPTS (1949-1951) and served as Chaplain in the Kentucky State Legislature (1952-1961).

Bishop Tullis has been active in several areas of the United Methodist church, serving on the Board of Managers of the General Board of Mission, Vice President and chair of the Division of Evangelism in the General Board of Discipleship and Vice President of the General Council on Finance and Administration. He has been a Trustee on 12 colleges and seminaries, and he is presently serving in his 42nd year as Secretary-Treasurer of the Magee Christian Education Foundation. He was elected to the Episcopacy of the United Methodist Church in 1972 and served as Resident Bishop of the Columbia, S.C., area and the Nashville, Tenn., area including Middle and West Tennessee and 100 churches in West Kentucky. He retired in 1984.

He is the author of "Shaping the Church from the Mind of Christ: A Study in Paul?s Letters to the Philippians" (Upper Room) and "The Birth of the Book: A Study of the Origin and Growth of the Bible" (The Intentional Growth Center), a study designed primarily for church school and Bible class leaders. He has written extensively for Adult Bible Series and other publications.

LEXINGTON TULLIS BISHOP EDWARD L. , 88 died at his Lake Junaluska home on October 6, 2005 following a short illness. Bishop Tullis was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended high school in northern Kentucky. He received his A.B. degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College and was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1939. He earned a B.D. degree from Louisville Theological Seminary and holds honorary degrees from Kentucky Wesleyan College, Union College, Wofford College, Lambuth University, and Claflin College. He was a member of the Hall of Fame of Kentucky Wesleyan College. Bishop Tullis has served on the Board of many Methodist Colleges and Universities including Union College, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Wofford College and Emory University. Bishop Tullis served pastorates in Frenchburg, Lawrenceburg, Louisville, Irvine, Frankfort, and Ashland, Kentucky. Bishop Tullis served his first ministry as Associate Pastor of the Fourth Avenue Methodist Church, Louisville. He served for five years as a National Church Extension Secretary. Elected to the Episcopacy in 1972, he was assigned to the Columbia, South Carolina Area from 1972-1980, and the Nashville, Tennessee Area from 1980-1984. Throughout his career Bishop Tullis took a leadership role in civil rights and women's rights in both the Church and community. Bishop Tullis believed a minister should be a minister for life and for 20 years after his retirement he taught an inter-generational Sunday School Class at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church, Lake Junaluska. He served with great pride and devotion as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Magee Christian Foundation for over 50 years. Bishop Tullis is the author of First Church Sermons, Shaping the Church from the Mind of Christ, and Birth of the Book: The Story of the Origin and Growth of the Bible. He recently completed a history of the Magee Christian Education Foundation. He was preceded in death last year by a brother, Ashar Spence Tullis. Bishop Tullis and the late Mary Jane Talley Tullis had two children, Frank L. Tullis (Janet) of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Jane Allen Offutt (William Nelson Offutt, IV, M.D.) of Georgetown, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Sandra Jane Tullis, Anne Francis Tullis, Jane Scott Hodges (Philip), and William Nelson Offutt V (Grandison); and three great grandchildren, Jane Talley Hodges, Philip Nalty Hodges Jr. and William Nelson Offutt VI. In 1997 Bishop Tullis married Katharine Crum Irwin who has two sons, Frank Jr. and Mason Crum Irwin, and daughter, Katharine, deceased. A memorial service celebrating the life of Bishop Tullis will be conducted at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church on Monday, October 10 at 11a.m. The Reverend Robert E. Fuquay, Jr. will conduct the service with other participants including Reverend Woody Adams, Bishop William WIllimon, Bishop William Morris, and Bishop Charlene Kammerer. Memorials may be sent to Long's Chapel UMC Building Fund, Lake Junaluska, North Carolina 28745, and/or the Lake Junaluska Capital Fund.
