About Edward O'Brien

Edward "Ned" O'Brien was the youngest son of John J. O'Brien and Mary Margaret Moroney. Edward was baptized at St. Monica's Roman Catholic Church. Patrick Conole was his sponsor. Edward was named after his mother's favorite uncle in Ireland, Edmond Conole. Edward's brothers and sisters referred to him as Ned. Ned attended St. Monica's Elementary School and South Park High School. As a youth, Ned was very active in sports. and played for neighborhood baseball and football teams. Edward's was also active in the Boy's Club on Babcock Street in the "old neighborhood".

On October 4, 1937 Edward joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at Sherburne, NY. One week later he was stationed at Camp F-127 Priest River, Idaho. The work assignment was called "brush cleanup". The men were involved in planting trees, and clearing fire trails. When Edward was working in Idaho he played baseball for the camp and was offered an athletic scholarship for Gonzaga University of Spokane, WA. He was honorably discharged from Fort Dix, NY on April 8, 1938, two days after his Nineteenth birthday.

Edward returned to Buffalo, Erie County, NY and started dating Clara Dorothy Harrington. She is the daughter of John J. Harrington and Clara Louise Trombley. Edward wanted to marry "Dorothy" as she preferred to be called but she wouldn't say yes until he finished high school. So, Edward enrolled in a general studies program and graduated from South Park High School in South Buffalo, Erie County, NY in June 1939. Edward married Dorothy at St. Monica's R.C.. Church on 27 April 1940 by the Reverend Father Fitzhenry. Gerald J. Fitzgibbons and Grace Trombley were the witnesses for the marriage. The wedding reception was held at Dorothy's parents home after the mass. They had a very short honeymoon because Dorothy had an appendix attack the next day and she went to the hospital for the next ten day after. Eddy was devastated and never let her forget she left him alone on there honeymoon. Dorothy said Eddie was always trying to make up for the shortened honeymoon. There first child was Edward Patrick O'Brien Jr. He was born on 12 Feb. 1941. Edward Sr. wanted to name him Bartholomew but Dorothy just wouldn't go for that and told him he could name the next child.

On May 31, 1944 Edward enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. His military specialty was AA. Gun Crewman aboard the USS. Gen. P. Richardson from 16 Sept.. 1944 until 4 Feb. 1946.
Before Edward went out to sea duty he had leave in Norfolk, VA and Dorothy went down to visit him. This is where there second son, Gregory Hugh O'Brien was conceived and Dorothy always referred to Gregory as her "Southern Baby". The USS. Gen. P. Richardson saw service in the war in Europe and the Middle East. Edward was honorably discharged on 7 Feb. 1946.

Edward came home to Buffalo to his two little boys and Dorothy and rented a flat in the neighborhood above his Aunt Ellen Moroney O'Neill. Not long after this Edward and Dorothy moved in with Edward's widowed father and took over the home on 30 Peabody Street. They were only there a few years when Allied Chemical Corporation expanded and bought the property. Dorothy had all the ideas and moved the house on to Orlando Street. This was one of the only homes in the neighborhood to have a full basement and central heating. Their three other children were born when they lived at this house - Deborah Louise, Kevin James and Molly Ann. Again Allied Chemical expanded but his time the moved and purchased three acres and an old farm house in West Seneca at 256 Langner Road. This was the kind of house that kept Dorothy and Edward busy the rest of their live fixing it up. They loved the house and had many a christening, first communion, graduation and wedding held there.

The Buffalo Creek Railroad is where Eddied was employed for most of his life. This was a small railroad within the Buffalo City limits that served Buffalo's waterfront and grainmills. He worked as a switchman and Yardmaster until his death on 2 October 1974. Edward and Dorothy were on vacation in Williamsburg, VA when he died. They were supposed to be in Ireland at this time but the Ireland trip was canceled, so they were driving around visiting relatives in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and their son, Kevin that was in the Army in Maryland. Dorothy continued to live at their home in West Seneca next to her oldest son, Ned and her sister Marion Chapman. Dorothy sold the home in June 1989 and moved into an apartment above her daughter, Molly's, until she died on 16 Sept. 1992. Edward and Dorothy are both buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna, NY.

Dorothy went to work full time after Eddie died. She worked for three OB/GYN doctors and ended up managing the office. She got her two daughters jobs and the three of them had a lot of fun working together. Dorothy took over where Eddie left off and the house was still open to all. Eddie never made it to Ireland but Dorothy did twice. In 1979 she and her sister-in-law, Kathleen O'Brien and I went on a two week trip. They were the first in the family to seek out the relations in Co. Clare. She also visited her fathers parish in Dunmanway, Co. Cork. Dorothy also returned in 1986 with her granddaughters, Erin and Jean O'Brien. Dorothy loved to travel and her motto was "have suitcase will travel". In 1976 Dorothy flew to Teheran, Iran for three weeks. There she visited the bazaars, deserts and mountains of Ancient Persia. In 1989 Dorothy sold the homestead at 256 Langner Road West Seneca and moved in upstairs from her youngest daughter Molly and family. She continued to work until she became too sick to work. In May of 1995 Dorothy illness progressed where she admitted herself into the Hospice Program where she died on September 15, 1995.
