    Elmer (Elmor, Elmore, Elmour, orig. Aylmer), Edward, b. in England; enrolled June 22, 1632, among those about to be conveyed to the plantations in America; he came in the ship Lion, which reached Boston 16 Sept., 1632; sett. first at Newtown (now Cambridge); came to Hartford with Rev. Thomas Hooker's company in 1636; rem. to Northampton abt. 1654; was a first settler there and witness to a deed from the Indians to Maj. John Pyncheon, for the Hartford Co'y, of land comprising the town of Hadley; ret. to Htfd. abt. 1660 and, same yr., became poss. of a large tract of land on E. side Great River, at Podunk, in what is now So. W., and which, with aid of his sons, he began to improve. In 1666 his sons, John and Samuel, resided there, and he was, in 1669, the only freeman of the name in W. In 1672, among those appointed to work the roads in W., were Edward, Sr., Edward, Jr., and John Elmer. He was killed by Indians, in June, 1676 (during the King Philip's War), probably at Podunk, or on his way thither, for he seems to have retained a res. and ppy. in Htfd. until his death. He m. Mary _____, probably after coming to Htfd., who was living 16 Apl., 1677, and is said to have m. (2) Thomas Catlin of Htfd., who was b. 1612, and d. about 1690, having had a first wife, also named Mary. A number of Edw. Elmer's desc. have since res. in (E.) W., and a part of the original purchase of land is still in poss. of the family, by direct inheritance.

    There is no credible evidence of his parentage or place of origin.

    Page 41—(Vol. IV) 20 April, 1681: Edward Elmore summoned the Legatees of the Estate of his Father, Edward Elmore, deceased, to appear at this Court to answer his complaint for non-payment of him the sd. Edward Elmore such sums of Money he hath payd for Debts due from the Estate of sd. Elmore, according to their several proportions. The Court having heard their allegations & seen their accots, find them so Litigeous that they see reason to appoint Wm Pitkin and Mr. Thomas Olcott to audite the accots of the Adms. & to find out what were the Debts of the sd. Elmore when he decd, & to what sume it doth amount to, as also what each of the Adms. of the Estate have payd to the payment of Debts, & return the same to the Governor & Magistrates as soon as they may, & then the Court will settle the same according to Rules of Justice. They are allso to bring an Account what the 6 acres of Meadow Lotted to pay Debts was sold for.

    Page 32—(Vol. VI) 18 June, 1696: Thomas Long complains that he hath not had that part of his Estate that is due to him in right of his wife from the Estate of Edward Elmer, Decd, but hath been rejected by law of part of the Land that was laid out to him by one of the Adms. on that Estate. This Court do order that the Adms., viz., John and Edward Elmer, do lay out his Land to him the sd. Thomas Long forthwith."
