Ed married Delora "Lorrie" Swisher on 02 Aug 1914 in Arcola, Webster County, WV. They had 4 children out of 5 children survive.

Called Ted by the family, he referred to himself as Ed. On file is a letter from Ed to his sister Flossie showing his signature as Ed. Envelope also has Ed Gray from Stuart, VA as return address. Printed in letter with phone number is Edsel. The 1930 census shows Edwin as does his marriage certificate. His brother's marriage certificate has "Edward" attesting to the information provided. (This type of confusion is so typical of the family's sense of humor.)

By 1930 he and Lorrie live next door to his brother Dewey. On the other side is Wilford Pribble (widowed brother-in-law) living with Wilford's son Harlie and his wife. Another relative, Harrison Holcomb, lived on the same street. In 1920 Ted was a laborer in the public works but by this time, he was a fireman at the lumber mill.

A child, probably their first, is buried in the Arcola Cemetery, Webster Co., WV. The headstone reads: "GRAY,Edwin & Delora, born & died June 2, 1915."
