Edna May Andrews was born on 20th October 1904 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of Florence Rose Andrews, a milliner. Edna appears in the 1911 census living with her mother, grandparents and baby brother at 76 Boyle Street in Luton. Her brother's name was Sidney Champkin Andrews. He died in 1913 when he was only four years old. In 1916, Edna's mother married a pedlar called Sidney Thomas Champkin, who thus became Edna's stepfather. Given the name of Edna's brother it is entirely possible that Sidney Thomas Champkin had also been the father of Edna's brother and he may possibly also have been Edna's father too.
In 1927 Edna witnessed the marriage of a Bethia Lewis, and the following year Edna married Bethia's brother, Reuben Lewis. They had two sons, one in 1929 and the other in 1931. Edna's mother died in 1935.
At the outbreak of the Second World War Edna and Reuben were living at 28 Somerset Avenue in Luton with their two sons and Edna's stepfather.
Reuben and Edna were married for about 33 years.
Edna died in 1961, aged 57. Reuben outlived her by over 20 years and remarried five years after her death.
