From the book "Sumpter - A Branch of the Family Tree" by Harold E. Sumpter:
Edmund Sumpter was born about 1738 in Hanover County, Virginia. The first record to be found of Edmund was in the list of tithables for the year 1764 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. There is also on record a land transfer to Edmund Sumpter in October 1768, in Charlotte County, Virginia. Edmund Sumpter and wife, Anne, had nine children. Edmund died sometime before 1797 since a deed dated June 1, 1797, mentions Anne Sumpter, widow of Edmund Sumpter.
