    ORIGIN: Dedham, Essex.
MIGRATION: 1635 (based on election as Watertown selectman on 25 November 1635 [WaTR 2]).
CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admission to Watertown church prior to 25 May 1636 implied by freemanship. Admission to New Haven church prior to 29 October 1640 implied by freemanship.
FREEMAN: 25 May 1636 (fifth in a sequence of eight Watertown men) [MBCR 1:372]. On 29 October 1640, "Goodman Shirman" was admitted a member of New Haven Court, after which his name was added to the list of New Haven freemen (NHCR 1:9, 44].
DEATH: Between 29 October 1640 [NHCR 1:44] and [blank] May 1641 [NHCR 1:52].
MARRIAGE: By 1599 Grace Makin, daughter of Tobias Makin [Michael J. Wood, private communication]. She was living on 14 June 1643 (when her husband's half-brother Samuel Sherman made a bequest to "My loving sister Sherman Edmond's widow" [PCC 14 Rivers; Waters 1178-79]).

  2.   This person is regularly attributed to the apparently inaccurate marriage Edmund Sherman and Joan Makin.
  3. On [blank] May 1641, “an inventory and will of old father Shirman’s was delivered into the Court” at New Haven [NHCR 1:52]. (These documents have not survived.)
  4.   The "private communication" aspect of the citation gives one pause, but it should be remembered that Mr. Wood was the individual who wrote the article in TAG 62 which identified Grace Ravens (and not Grace Makin) as wife of John Sherman, Thomas Rogers, and Roger Porter. He was, therefore, very familiar with the issues involved.
