Research notes

The will of Edmund Noel of Essex County was dated 14 August 1804. Beloved wife. “…property that my daughter Betsey carried with her to Hanover County as she has now departed this life leaving three children by name Edmund N. Priddy, Nancy Priddy & Delilah Priddy…” Children Edmund, Eunice, Sally, Polly, Nancy, Juliet & Delilah. Signed Edmund Noel. Presented in court on 19 September 1808 by Betty Noel the widow and executrix, and thereupon came James Sale, Andrew Monroe, Theodericks Noel, and John Sale, who declare on oath that they were well acquainted with the hand writing of the said Edmund Noel. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17:88–89]

On 27 December 1813 a division of the slaves of the estate of the late Edmund Noel was made “between John Richeson, Robert Sale, & George Turner in right of their wives, and Polly Noel, Juliet Noel, Delilah Noel & Edmund Noel, the children…” by W Fisher, James Hunter, and Wm Noel. “I was under age when the foregoing Division was made — I am now of legal age and do agree to it, and hold myself bound my it — Given under my hand the 21st day of Feby. 1814 Edmund F. Noel”. Dower right of Betty Noel, widow of Edmund Noel, is acknowledged. Ordered recorded on 21 February 1814. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17:519–522.]

On 17 November 1823, Edmund F. Noel was bound without security in the penalty of $20,000 for his executorship of the estate of Edmund Noel, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19:419–420.]

On 19 December 1823, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Edmund Noel, deceased, made by Walter Bowie, William Fisher, Wm. C. Latane, and Richard Motley, and was submitted on 16 May 1825 by Edmund F. Noel, executor. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20:182–184.]
