Edith Sophia Sykes was born on 3rd September 1866 at Deddington in Oxfordshire, daughter of Betsy Sykes, formerly Clarke, and her husband Thomas Sykes, an agricultural labourer. She appears to have been known as Sophia, with the 'Edith' not being used on her birth certificate , baptism, nor her childhood appearances in censuses, but it does appear on her marriage certificate and some of her records as an adult.
Sophia was married in 1886, aged about 20, to a horsekeeper and farm labourer named David Smith. They married at Luton in Bedfordshire, quite some distance from Deddington. Sophia and David had a son, Alfred, in Luton in 1888. Their second son, George Albert, was born in Deddington in 1890, but after that they returned to Luton, where they were to live for the rest of their lives.
The family appears in the 1891 census living at 'Why Ax Ye', which was a much photographed picturesque thatched cottage on Park Street just outside the built up area as it then was. They had a daughter, Alice Maud, in 1893, but she died at the age of two.
By 1901 the family was living at 30 Park Road West in Luton, with David working as a horse keeper. In 1911 the family was living at 46 Cambridge Street. They continued living there until about 1934, when they moved a few doors down to 38 Cambridge Street. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Sophia and David were still living there.
David died in 1941, aged 74. Sophia outlived him by just under ten years. She continued to live at 38 Cambridge Street for the rest of her life. She died in Luton on 16th April 1951, at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital. She was 84 years old.
