    POISON CAUSES WOMAN'S DEATH
Tablets Taken With Suicidal Intent Fatal to Mrs. Edith Carpenter
    WAS ILL, DESPONDENT

Mrs. Edith Carpenter, aged 47, of Fort Wayne R. R. 9, East State Extended, died at 1:15 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Hospital from the effects of poison which she took with suicidal intent Thursday morning. Her condition was critical since she was taken to the hospital Thursday after swallowing bichloride of mercury tablets at her home. Dr. L. S. McLeeman, Allen County coroner returned a verdict of suicide in the case. Members of the family attributed Mrs. Carpenter's act to despondency over an extended period of ill health. She was the wife of Ray Carpenter. She took the poison about 10:30 a.m. Thursday and did not tell anyone of her act until about two hours later. Her husband noticed that she was very ill and upon questioning her was informed she swallowed the tablets. The Ulmer emergency ambulance was called and the woman rushed to the hospital. Surviving are the husband; a son, David; two daughters, the Misses Virginia and Delores; the father, George L. Hobson, and two brothers, William A. and Eli Hobson, all of Fort Wayne.
