Stickney, Edgar H., 91, a former resident of Montpelier, died Aug. 29at RiverMead in New Hampshire, where he had lived since 1997. He was born Aug. 14, 1910, in Rutland, the son of William L. and Pauline (Seward) Stickney. He attended Rutland schools and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1932. He was a member of the Honorary Scientific Society of Sigma Zi, the Engineering Society Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He married the former Mildred Conner June 15, 1935. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1945, serving in Guadalcanal, the North Solomon Islands, Saipan and Okinawa. He was executive officer and construction officer with the SeaBees. Mr. Stickney began work at the Vermont Highway Department in 1932, where he remained for 45 years, retiring in 1977. He was actively involved in the planning and construction of the Vermont interstate highway system. He was a registered professional engineer and licensed surveyor, a member and past president of the Vermont Society of Engineers, and several other professional organizations. He was selected Vermont Engineer of the Year in 1976. He was a member of the Masonic Bodies, the Shrine and the First Congregational Church of Hancock, N.H. and the Lake Mansfield Trout Club, where he served as president and vice president. Survivors include his wife of 66 years of Peterborough; two daughters, a son, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Sue Ellen Stickney, died in 1954.
