[edit] NotesAccording to Pelletreau (the History of Putnam County, New York), Eber Townsend went to Sussex County, New Jersey A NATIONAL REGISTER OF THE SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION PRINCIPAL EVENTS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. CHARLES C. TOWNSEND, Benton, Wis. (3660). Son of Add A. and Marian E. (Trewella) Townsend; grandson of Absalom and Mary (Ross) Townsend; great-grandson of Samuel and Mary (Langwell) Townsend; great2-grandson of Eber Townsend, private Dutchess County New York troops, prisoner. Subj: Charles Townsend Date:3/27/99 12:40:41 PM Pacific Standard Time From:lbbeggin@@one-eleven.net (Laurie Beth Beggin) To:delijim@@aol.com I have checked back periodically to see if you have had any responses regarding the lineage of Charles Townsend. My lineage is Eber, Samuel, George Nelson, Samuel Asher, Rebecca Matilda, Estella. My family has long believed that Eber's father was Henry Townsend, one of the "three brothers". Laurie Townsend-Beggin NOTE: Laurie later consulted the Townsend Society of America newsletter, and learned that Eber was more likely a son of Charles Townsend.
"Immigration began to flow quite rapidly in the year 1828, when a large number of energetic, thrifty people were attracted toward it-much more so than to many other townships in the county - among them being George N., Ira L, and Hallstead S. Townsend. The Townsends were fine specimens of physical manhood and could trace their lineage back to noble ancestry. They were of English descent, their ancestors having emigrated to America at an early day. Eber Townsend of this family was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and 'was wounded and captured by the Indians'. Halstead S. Townsend rose to considerable prominence and represented the county in the State Legislature two terms in 1859 and 1871. References
